The Issue: Disease Prevention

Public health is best promoted by preventing disease.
Public health is best promoted by preventing disease. Cleanliness promotes good health. Yet each year, because of a simple lack of knowledge, people of all ages unwittingly come in contact with disease causing pathogens. They risk illness as a result. They can also transmit germs to loved ones in their homes, to colleagues at work and school, and to others in the community. This continuing cycle of disease presents a challenge to the good health of adults and children throughout the United States and around the world.

The Alliance for Consumer Education (ACE)

The Alliance for Consumer Education (ACE) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Washington, DC. ACE's mission is "to promote responsible and beneficial use of products to ensure a safer, healthier and cleaner environment in homes, businesses and the community." The purpose of ACE's Disease Prevention program is to provide information necessary to break the cycle of disease transmission. Other core ACE programs include Inhalant Abuse Prevention, Poison Prevention, and Product Management. ACE is affiliated with the Consumer Specialty Products Association.

To support its efforts, ACE has a comprehensive website: www.StopGerms.org. It features an interactive educational house, FAQ sheets on seasonal topics, and news stories focused on disease prevention. The site is designed to equip visitors with knowledge of common pests that can cause illness, the places in the home where these pests can typically hide, and the steps one can take to protect family's health.

ACE’s educational mission is not limited solely to adults. Like most good lessons, the earlier they are learned, the longer they are followed and the greater are their benefits. Therefore, ACE looks for ways that it can meaningfully teach children the importance of good health and the habits of good hygiene.

Reaching and Teaching Children

It is no secret that one very effective tool for teaching young children is the use of animated characters in various mediums. ACE has developed “Ace Clean and the Gleam Team”, an animated cartoon super hero and his elementary school sidekicks designed to teach kids about good health through cleanliness and proper hygiene practices.

With cold and flu season upon us, ACE is gearing up efforts to educate children on simple steps they can take to keep themselves safe and healthy. This is why 90,000 comic-book styled educational book covers were developed and distributed to New York area school children. The comic-book styled covers featured Ace Clean and Marvel Entertainment’s Iron Man!

The book covers were developed in partnership with the Association for Professionals in Infection Control & Epidemiology (APIC). To learn more about APIC, please visit www.apic.org; for consumer-related information check out www.preventinfection.org.

To raise awareness of its initiative, ACE hosted an event in Times Square on Friday, October 1st. To learn more, please click here.
